The band formerly know as RIIL Chemistry is now the Gnarly!
Don’t let their ages fool you, these kids have serious chops, a passion to rock, and newest single Infinity ( as RIIL Chemistry on Soundcloud) to back it up.
RIIL formed in 2012, with the band writing and performing together for 6 years, until their drummer Isaac graduated and headed to college at UT Dallas. Enter new drummer Logan Greenberg , thus a new name and new songs. They have been rockin’ it everywhere from fundraisers, private parties and area festivals, to coffeehouses ( this begins year 5 of shows at the Cherrywood!) and bars, always turning heads when people realize it is a group of 17 and under teens making this joyful noise. Their sound veers from from punk to blues to straight ahead rock and roll with influences as diverse as Zeppelin and Hendrix to RHCP, The Strokes, MUSE and Beck ( they covers tunes by the latter 4 in their set!). The band will continue to perform some of RIIL Chemistry’s originals but are hard at work writing new material , with 3 new songs already in the mix.

Jay Cannady is an American singer-songwriter living and working in Austin, TX. Jay spent his youth in rural Georgia where he was influenced early on from his mother performing bluegrass, gospel, and country music in the southeast. His personal musical journey began in 2014 after he gave up drinking and discovered a hidden talent for songwriting. Jay’s songs are honest working class gems that capture the reality of hard times in American life. His recovery from open heart surgery, financial trouble, heartbreak, and alcoholism, inspired him to write a catalog of original songs that tell it all. Imagine the truth in a Hank Williams song coupled with the gentle raspy vocal style of Lyle Lovett. His simple lyrics and humble approach are authentic and believable. Jay’s stories span from his childhood in rural Georgia to his latest adventures in the Texas Hill Country. If you enjoy Americana and roots music that lean heavily on classic country and old time rock and roll, then Jay from Georgia is an act you must see!

The Singer & the Songwriter

Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran create music as vibrant and diverse as their multiracial backgrounds. Rachel’s rich, nuanced vocal delivery and Thu’s dynamic guitar arrangements provide the backbone for the duo’s swinging, soulful and heartfelt songs that tell emotionally honest and compelling stories. Their identities as mixed-race-Mexican-American and first-generation-Vietnamese-American (respectively) subtly inform the inclusionary, modernist perspective of their lyrics, which provide “smart commentary on social attitudes” (Pasadena Weekly), while their music and melodies cut across decades of classic American song forms, bending and blending genres to produce a unique sound with a fresh, clever and distinct approach to the classic traditions of American jazz, folk and blues.
