Dark Kards

“Family” may not be the first word that comes to mind when thinking of
the legendary British post-punk band New Order, but Austin’s Dark
Kards will change your way of thinking. Nominally, Dark Kards is a
tribute band saluting the earliest work of New Order, but it’s also an
exciting cross-generational project, featuring Andy Dolan and his
three children, Ryan, Adrienne, and Kiersten. Ever since Andy was in
his teens, he fervently believed that New Order’s earliest records
would be an excellent way to learn how to play music. This idea was
revived when his son Ryan began creating drum patterns on the
online site beepbox.co and his daughters Adrienne and Kiersten
expressed interest in keyboards and vocals. Together, the family
learned how to play their instruments and, encouraged by their
favorite indie bands Guerilla Toss, Ohmme, and A Deer A Horse, they
decided to form their own combo in the summer of 2019. It took a bit
of time before they played a show, though. It wasn’t until the quartet
were suffering from severe jet lag at Yoko Cafe in Vietnam’s Ho Chi
Minh City that the group summoned the courage to jump on stage with a
drummer they just befriended at the bar, bashing out a New Order
song they learned at home. Energized by their impromptu concert, Dark
Kards decided to play their home town of Austin, inspired by a scene that
features Karaoke Underground, Super Thief, Dikes of
Holland, Teen Pope, Pleasure Venom, Borzoi, Xetas, Dregs, Exhalants,
and the Stereolab cover band The Groop. What sets Dark Kards apart is
their vivacious and enthusiastic spirit, one that redefines what
family rock & roll groups can do and recasts the music of New Order
into a new light.
